Boat Propellers ... Obviously The Whole Concept Of Propellers Leaves A Lot To Be Desired.
Consider this ... most
outboard propellers operate in a hostile environment.
What’s under the water is out of
sight and out of mind. I mean ... when you're driving a boat, you
really can’t see where the propeller is going.
All this makes you wonder ... is
this really the ideal place to put your
propeller ... your only
means of propulsion?
Even worse ...
your propeller is sitting 95% deeper in the water than the
rest of your boat. The propeller blades are totally
unprotected ... jutting out at right angles ... flirting with whatever object of destruction
is streaming by with the flow.
CRUNCH ... BEND ...
BREAK.
There
It Goes Again!
A Fresh Approach To Boat Propellers. Boat propellers need to be less
vulnerable.
Unless someone finds a
way to get your outboard propeller out of harms way ... without losing
any performance ... the risk isn’t going to diminish.
Managing the risk is a better idea
... don’t you think?
Since all metal
propellers are a compromise, the design engineers at Piranha Propellers went with something
else.
Using glass for stiffness and
a polymer base for durability and light weight, all the
important characteristics were realized.
Welcome
to modern thermoplastic composite materials and the worlds
only composite, modular propeller.
Piranha propellers are not alone in the use of composite materials.
Piranha are in good company as Boeing Aircraft recently announced the use of composite material as opposed to aluminium throughout the construction of the Boeing Dreamliner passenger jet.
The airliners are significantly lighter and more economical to operate partly explaining why Qantas has ordered a huge number of the new airliners.
So composite must be good ... but it really doesn't take much
imagination to see how a boat propeller which is thirty
percent lighter will accelerate your boat faster and
extend the life of your lower unit.

View (on right) of four blade option which is very good news for water skiers and wake boarders ... available for most motors above seventy horsepower.
Aluminium ... Stainless Steel ... Or Composite?
You could ask the same question in a different way by asking if it's Metal Or Modern?
Your point
of view would depend entirely on the waterway in which you go
boating.
Both stainless steel and aluminium outboard propellers would probably need repair
after striking an underwater obstruction. They may even need to be thrown away.
If they can be repaired they go
to a workshop where they are welded, pounded, and heat
treated to a useable condition ... then they need to be balanced.
That's about the time you would be
thanking your lucky stars you had a spare propeller which
brought you home and kept you boating while you waited for your other prop to be repaired.
Alternatively, you do not repair a
damaged Piranha propeller ... you just replace the
damaged modules.
What was damaged is
made new ... brand new with all the strength, integrity,
balance and performance of the original ... for the same or less money!.
Repair It ... Re-pitch It ... You Don't Have To
Ditch It.
The design
engineers at Piranha Propellers made this possible by
incorporating replaceable blades into a new design which
became the world's only modular composite marine propeller.
Only replace what’s
damaged and you will save money.
Very simple ... It’s so simple,
you can perform the repairs yourself ... In minutes... without special tools ... no matter where you are.
You achieve a higher
quality repair, in vastly less time, without any special tools
or metallurgical training.
Even if
damage was so severe as to destroy all the blades on the
Piranha propeller, it will usually cost less than the equivalent
repairs to an aluminum prop, and about 1/2 as much as a
new aluminum prop.
The same
replacement approach could be used with
a stainless steel propeller ... but not as economically.
So ... if you operate in deep water
you could use a stainless steel or an aluminium propeller ... but if you operate in less
than ideal conditions which are much more common ... and that seems
to be where all the biggest fish hang out ... you should
definitely use a composite propeller made by Piranha Propellers.
